A Fan’s Perspective on WEC 50

I’m not here to breakdown the fights, that’s not my thing. I’m here to share what I saw last night. Some things were subtle and others were quite obvious. Be sure to share your comments or thoughts at the bottom. Here’s a rundown of the things that I noticed.

  • Stephan Bonnar looked like he spent too much time on his hair and just grabbed a shirt off the floor before leaving to go to work. Doesn’t this guy realize he’s going to be on camera?
  • The canvas of the blue octagon has already seen a blood bath before the 1st televised fight. Man I wish I could’ve seen that.
  • Bart Palaszewski def. Zack Micklewright by KO (punch)  0:31 R2
  • Bart must be a huge Dan Hardy Fan, what with his red mo hawk and all.
  • Someone in the stands shouted “Kick ‘em in the face!”
  • Scott Jorgensen def. Brad Pickett by unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 30-27) R3
  • Bonnar insists that Pickett has great jits. Why, then, did Bruce Buffer introduce him only as a Striker?
  • Pickett lost, found, and replaced his mouthpiece all while getting attacked.
  • Jorgensen can eat a Knuckle Sandwich and ask for seconds.
  • The commentator proclaimed this fight an instant classic and I wanted to reach through my Vizio and punch him in the ear. Sure, the fight was entertaining, but it in no way was as awesome as last year’s Fight of the Year: Clay Guida vs Diego Sanchez.
  • Chad Mendes def. Cub Swanson by unanimous decision (30-27, 29-28, 29-28) R3
  • Cub Swanson couldn’t stop a take down to save his life.
  • Mendes never seemed to notice his opponent had a 4″ reach advantage.
  • Anthony Pettis def. Shane Roller by submission (triangle choke) 4:51 R3
  • Finally! A shot of Brittney Palmer. I’m not saying that for us guys, I’m saying it for her career. We see more of Arianny Celeste at a UFC event than we do any non-fighter. Tonight all I remember seeing is Urijah Faber… and he didn’t even fight!
  • Alienware is in da house tonight!!! My goodness, I never thought a bunch of super intelligent ET’s would be sponsoring a fighter.
  • “Showtime” Pettis looked like a ninja. Could he get Bruce Bugger to introduce him as such for his next fight?
  • Think about it: “In the red corner, blah blah blah, this man is a ninja, holding a professional record of…” Now that would be an instant classic!
  • Roller didn’t show up until the 3rd round, by then it was virtually too late. He was pedestrian at best tonight.
  • I now have a new Super Fight to dram about: Anthony “Showtime” Pettis vs. Jon “Bones” Jones.

Bantamweight Championship Bout

  • Dominick Cruz def. Joseph Benavidez by split decision (47-48, 48-47, 49-46) R5
  • Joe B. looks like he should be on Half Pint Brawlers. Dude is short!
  • Nice fan-friendly pace through round 4.
  • Cruz is by far the better wrestler. I know this because Bonnar wouldn’t let me forget.
  • Benavidez has sharp knees.
  • 5th and Final Round: Champ is losing… his shorts. Twice he had to use his footwork to create time to fasten them. If only there were some super intelligent beings that could make shorts that stayed on. Hmmmm.
  • The UFC, AMP, and KSWISS took the lion’s share of the commercial spots. Oh yeah, Versus plugged their shows too.
  • AMP Hometown Takedown is sending the WEC to Phoenix, AZ.

All in all it was a great night of fights. Best of all it was free. What did I miss?
